Fraser Island (K'gari) is the world's largest sand island and a World Heritage-listed area. With 122km of endless white sand beaches, rainforests, sand dunes and freshwater lakes to explore, it's a dream destination for anyone seeking adventure.

Fortunately, there are plenty of day tours and cruises on offer to help you see all the highlights in a short space of time. However, if you want to truly experience everything this iconic World Heritage-listed destination has to offer, we recommend spending at least two days.

1. Accommodation

Fraser Island offers a variety of accommodation options. It is a great destination for tourists of all ages and budgets.

Whether you're looking for a resort, beach house, or camping accommodation, there are plenty of places to stay on this UNESCO World Heritage-listed island. You can choose from cabins, powered or unpowered campsites and even double tents!

There are also many hotels and resorts on the island that offer a bit of extra comfort for their guests. They often have shops, restaurants and pools to make your stay a little more enjoyable.

One of the most popular resorts on the island is Eurong Beach Resort. This is located along 75 Mile Beach on the eastern side of the island.

2. Activities

UNESCO-listed Fraser Island is the world's largest sand island and hub for exhilarating 4WD adventures on its giant dunes and white-sand beaches. Explore wind-sculpted technicolour cliffs, check out a beached shipwreck, and follow trails through lush rainforest.

There are more than 100 shimmering freshwater lakes on the island, including iconic Lake McKenzie and its pure white-sand beach. Red-hued Lake Boomanjin (the sand gets its colour from tea trees) is another popular swimming spot.

One of the most thrilling activities on Fraser Island is whale watching - from August through October you'll be able to catch humpback whales in their natural habitat, breaching and spraying water into the air! Book a cruise with Blue Dolphin Marine Tours for a half or full day experience to see these majestic creatures up close and personal.

Fraser Island is a year-round destination with plenty to offer to visitors of all ages. However, spring and summer are the most popular times to visit this pristine holiday destination.

3. Things to Do

If you’re planning a holiday to Fraser Island, there are plenty of things to see and do. You can explore the island on a 4WD tour, cruise with Humpback whales, or walk through the rainforest.

One of the best ways to get around Fraser Island is on a tour that includes everything you need, like meals and national park fees. They also provide hotel pick-up and drop-off, transportation to and from the ferry, and an experienced guide who will explain everything you see on the island.

You’ll be able to visit many of the top Fraser Island attractions on this tour, including Eli Creek, Champagne Pools, and The Maheno Shipwreck. There are also some more remote places to check out, such as Lake Wabby.

Another great thing to do is to take a scenic flight over the island. It’s a once in a lifetime experience, and you’ll be able to spot Humpback whales as they travel here to give birth.

4. Things to Avoid

As one of Australia’s top destinations, Fraser Island has something for everyone. The island is a place of incredible beauty, with white sand beaches, crystal clear waters, and lush rainforests to explore.

It’s also home to some stunning wildlife, including dolphins, dugongs, turtles, and a variety of fish species. It’s an amazing experience for scuba divers and snorkelers as well, who can enjoy exploring the surrounding waters from a completely different perspective.

But before you head out on your adventure, there are a few things to keep in mind.

The first thing to note is that you won’t be able to drive your normal car on Fraser Island, so be sure to bring a 4WD. There are no paved roads on the island, so you’ll need something with high clearance and low-range capacity to tackle all that sand driving.

Another tip to make sure you don’t get bogged is to lower the pressure in your tyres before driving on the beach. This will help them withstand the soft sand and make it less likely you’ll get stuck.
