Whether you’re a history buff, an adventure junkie or simply in search of some jaw-dropping Alpine scenery, Innsbruck has plenty to offer.

The old town is filled with Gothic and Baroque architecture while sights like the Golden Roof and the Imperial Palace give you a glimpse of Innsbruck’s rich past. The city also has a variety of modern landmarks that are sure to excite your travel bug.

The Old Town

One of the most charming and cozy places to explore in Innsbruck, the Old Town is full of pastel-colored medieval buildings and twisting streets. The town is also home to many popular attractions like the Golden Roof, Court Church and City Tower.

For a different view of the city, head to the top of the City Tower to catch the views over the River Inn. Another must-visit is the Hofkirche, a striking black marble tomb that’s flanked by 28 huge Renaissance bronze statues of ancestors and heroes.

The Golden Roof

The Golden Roof, known as the 'Goldenes Dachl', is one of Innsbruck's most iconic landmarks. A three-story balcony, it was completed in the 1500s to celebrate Emperor Maximilian I's second marriage, this time to Bianca Maria Sforza of Milan (Maximilian expanded his territory through marriage, not conquest).

The gilded copper tiles are a must see here, but it’s also worth checking out the masterful frescoes underneath. The building’s history is as fascinating as the rooftop itself.

Innsbruck

The Triumphal Arch

Located at the southern end of Maria-Theresien-Strasse, the Triumphal Arch is one of the most iconic sights of Innsbruck. It's constructed in a Roman style, much like the Arc de Triomphe in Paris or London's Marble Arch.

The Triumphal Arch was built in 1765 to commemorate the marriage of Empress Maria Theresa's son, Leopold, and Spanish Princess Maria Ludovica. It features breathtaking marble friezes and is a great place to stop for a photo!

Maria-Theresien-Strasse

One of the most famous streets in Innsbruck, Maria-Theresien-Strasse is a pedestrian promenade that’s a delight to explore. It’s home to various historic landmarks, cafes and shops, and has a great view of St. Anne’s Column, Triumphal Arch and the Golden Roof.

The street is also home to the Tyrolean Folk Art Museum, which offers a glimpse into the culture of the city. This is a popular destination amongst visitors during the winter as it has lots of interactive installations and exhibits to see.

Innsbruck

The Imperial Palace

The Imperial Palace, or Hofburg in Innsbruck, represents a significant part of the architectural patrimony of the Republic of Austria. It was built in the year 1500 under Emperor Maximilian I and is still used today for receptions, gala dinners and other events involving senior individuals.

The Hofburg comprises four wings, round towers and a Gothic cellar. It also contains Maria Theresia's rooms from the eighteenth century, Empress Elisabeth's Apartment and a Furniture Museum.

Ambras Palace

Located in the beautiful city of Innsbruck, Ambras Palace is one of the most important sights of Tyrol. Its museum complex is world-renowned for its collections of Renaissance art and objects.

The Ambras Collection comprises three elements: the Rustkammer, which houses the Archduke's wedding armour and 2.6m suit for giant Bartlma Bon; the Chamber of Art and Wonders (Kunst- und Wunderkammer), whose contents are divided into categories such as a collection of animal figures or musical instruments; and the Habsburg portrait gallery.

Objects made of ivory and coral, scientific objects and renaissance portraits will catch your eye. The Spanish Hall is worth a visit, with its coffered ceiling and beautiful frescos of Tyrolese nobles.

Innsbruck

Bergisel Ski Jump

One of Innsbruck’s newest iconic attractions is the Bergisel Ski Jump, a 47-meter tower designed by star architect Zaha Hadid. With its panoramic viewing platform, the tower provides sweeping views of Tirol’s mountain scenery and Innsbruck.

During the winter season, the ski jump is the site of competitions including the Four Hills Tournament and Youth Olympics. The facility is a must-visit on any trip to Innsbruck.

For history and architecture enthusiasts, a tour of the stadium is available that covers all aspects of the venue’s Olympic history. There’s also a museum devoted to the sport, and an exhibition of ski jumping memorabilia.
