Bosnia and Herzegovina is a fascinating place, full of history and a lot to see. Whether you’re looking to explore a historic city, raft down the Tara Canyon or hike through craggy mountains, there are plenty of great spots to visit here.
Sarajevo is the country’s capital and a must-see for anyone visiting. It’s a city that has been shaped by war and sadness, but it also has a lot of life to offer.
Mostar
Mostar is a stunning city with cobbled streets, historic buildings, and a spectacular bridge that spans the Neretva River. It’s a must-see for anyone visiting Bosnia and Herzegovina.
If you’re looking for the best things to do in Mostar, look no further than its Old Town. Wandering this quaint cobbled street, you’ll come across cafes, souvenir shops, and an authentic Bosnian food scene.
The Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque is one of the most beautiful mosques in the region. The original was damaged during the Croat-Bosniak conflict, but it’s now been rebuilt.
You can also check out the Museum of War and Genocide Victims, which is an incredibly moving experience. It’s worth paying a visit if you’re interested in learning about the war that took place in Bosnia.
Blagaj
Blagaj is a lovely little town that sits at the source of the Buna river. It's home to a 600-year-old tekke (money) of the Dervish order, a branch of Sufis, which has a stunning location on the cliff.
The tekke is located at the base of a 200m-high cliff, and next to an underground karst river that flows out into the Buna. It's a gorgeous series of buildings that look even better in person than they do in photographs, and you can get a nice view from the top.
The town also has a beautiful fortress, Stjepan grad. During the Ottoman period, construction began in the fortress outskirts with public edifices (bridges, hans, hammams). Residential areas formed typologically as urban quarters or mahalas, with buildings facing inwards onto their courtyards. Resident complexes were evidence of a high standard of living; the Velagic house complex is one of the most valuable groups of this type in Herzegovina.
Ostrozac Castle
Ostrozac Castle is a very popular tourist attraction located in the Una-Sana Canton, just outside the town of Cazin. The castle dates back to the 16th century and was remodeled in the 1900s.
The castle is surrounded by a courtyard and it is home to a collection of stone sculptures. The castle is a great location for outdoor concerts and events.
The castle is believed to have been built in the 13th century, and it was owned by the Babonic family until 1592 when it was captured by the Ottomans. Major Lothar von Berks bought the castle in 1902, and he and his wife lived there with their children until 1946.
Sutjeska National Park
The oldest and the largest of its kind in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sutjeska National Park is a conservation area that covers a mountainous region on the border with Montenegro. It is primarily known for its flora and fauna, but is also famous as the location of the Battle of Sutjeska during WWII.
The park is home to Perucica forest, which is one of the last two remaining primeval forests in Europe. It is also renowned for its scenic beauty.
The park’s highest mountain is Maglic (2,386 m/ 7,828 ft), and the massif extends to Bioc, Lebrsnik, Volujak, and Zelengora. Seven glacial lakes on the massif are called “mountain eyes” and are considered beautiful examples of Dinaric Alps.
