If you're planning to visit Cuba, it's important to know where to go and what to see. Luckily, this country is full of incredible spots to explore.
If you're looking for a relaxing beach holiday, head to the resort island of Cayo Largo del Sur. It's home to some of the best beaches in Cuba, as well as a fascinating sea turtle hatchery.
Varadero
Varadero is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Cuba. Its beautiful white sand beaches and crystal clear turquoise waters are the main reason why visitors flock to this part of the country.
While many people visit Varadero to stay in a luxurious all-inclusive resort, this area of Cuba is much more than that! A few miles away from the beach you can find some interesting natural reserves, a vibrant nightlife and some great cultural activities.
Some of the most popular activities in Varadero are scuba diving, water sports and boat trips to the local islands. However, if you're looking for a little more culture then it's worth taking a bus tour around the city.
You'll see the old Spanish watchtower, Church of Santa Elvira & Josone Park along with some craft stalls and La Bodeguita del Medio - one of Ernest Hemingway's favourite bars. You can also explore the Casa Del Ron - a fascinating museum about the history and taste of Cuban rum.
Santiago de Cuba
Situated in southeastern Cuba, Santiago de Cuba has a distinct Afro-Cuban cultural heritage. This is reflected in the city's lively Carnaval, held every July.
In Santiago de Cuba, you can visit a lot of interesting places and museums. One of them is the Museum of Historical Cuban Atmosphere, where you can learn more about the history of this beautiful island.
Another place to visit is the city's historic El Morro fortress. This 17th-century fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The best time to visit Santiago de Cuba is during the annual Carnaval in July. This is where the city's distinctive Afro-Cuban culture reveals itself in colorful costume and son dancing.
This is a very hot area of Cuba so dress lightly, apply sunscreen often and don't forget to drink plenty of bottled water. Also, don't forget to keep an eye out for jiniteros, or street hustlers, who may take advantage of you.
Topes de Collantes
Topes de Collantes, Cuba’s mountainous national park, is home to some of the island’s best hiking and a large array of breathtaking waterfalls. The park, which sits about 30 km from Trinidad, is a World Heritage Site and is a must for anyone who loves the outdoors.
The park’s grand mountainous forests, cold water and winding trails are all part of what makes it so special. It’s also home to a large number of native flora and fauna, many endemic to the country.
For a hike, try the well-marked Centinelas del Rio Melodioso trail, which starts in coffee plantations and drops into a valley with two waterfalls. There’s also the 27m high El Rocio waterfall and Poza de Venado, a pool with plenty of room for swimming.
For a unique experience, book a private tour of the area with a local guide. This will give you a chance to see some of the lesser-known aspects of Topes de Collantes, and learn about the history of the region as well.
Cienfuegos
Cienfuegos is the perfect Cuban city to experience a more laid-back side of the country. This beautiful resort town on the Caribbean Sea is filled with gorgeous coves, beaches and natural pools, and it also boasts a pleasant historical center.
For history lovers, you can tour the Cienfuegos Railway Museum, where you’ll see how the railway was built and learn about its impact on the region. If you’re interested in architecture, make sure to check out the Cienfuegos Cathedral, which is a stunning example of Neoclassical design.
If you’re into music, don’t miss the Teatro Tomas Terry, which is situated on Jose Marti Park and was built in 1895 to honor the Cuban freedom fighter. The theater is still in use and hosts regular shows.
You can also try a cup of delicious, locally brewed coffee in Mon Petit Cafe and La Buena Pipa. Located next to a quaint square, the two are a great place to grab lunch or drinks.
