Lake Atitlan is a fabulous place to explore and there are so many things to see and do. But one village stands out in particular - Santa Cruz La Laguna!
This beautiful village is split between a touristy waterfront resort and an indigenous Kaqchiquel village. There are lots of Gringo-oriented businesses along the waterfront (west from the dock), but once you climb into town, it feels much more local.
1. Explore the Town
There are many things to see and to do in Santa Cruz La Laguna. You can explore the town, try out a Mayan sauna, or just relax on the beach.
If you're looking for an adventure, you can take a rock climbing tour with Los Elementos. The company offers top-rope climbs and canyon climbs that are fun for all ages and levels of experience.
Another fun thing to do is hike up to Los Dos Miradores, which offer great views of the lake. It's an easy hike, but you'll need to be fit.
2. Take a Cooking Class
Cooking classes are a great way to learn the art of cooking. They're also a great way to try new foods and have fun.
Children should take cooking classes, because they help them develop important life skills, such as patience and problem-solving. Plus, they often teach the importance of eating healthy and nutritious meals.
You can find cooking classes around the world at many different locations, from private homes to upscale restaurants. There are even some online cooking courses that allow you to learn from professional chefs without leaving your home.
3. Go on a Cultural Tour
One of the best ways to experience Santa Cruz La Laguna is on a cultural tour. Every Friday at 9:30 am, Claudia Cumes offers a 3-hour tour through this beautiful Mayan town, including learning about local non-profit Amigos de Santa Cruz, visiting CECAP (the vocational school), and eating delicious food at Cafe Sabor Cruceno.
There are several great businesses in San Juan La Laguna that make amazing local souvenirs and clothing items. Trama Textiles, for example, is a women’s weaving co-op that was formed in 1988 to support women after the Guatemalan Civil War left them with few options for income generation.
4. Go on a Pickup Tour
If you're looking for an adventure in Santa Cruz La Laguna, consider a pickup tour. This community-based tour company is run by local guides, and proceeds go directly to the community.
Hike up to Los Dos Miradores, which are two peaks in the valley that offer spectacular views of Lake Atitlan. It's a strenuous hike that leads up from Santa Cruz, passing natural springs and jocote trees, to the top of a narrow ridge.
Another great activity is a cooking class at Cafe Sabor Cruceno, which is situated at the top of Santa Cruz and gives amazing views of the lake and its volcanoes from its outdoor patio. And don't forget to try the incredibly delicious coffee "barraquito"!
5. Go on an Adventure Tour
There are a number of options for you to get out and enjoy some outdoor fun in Santa Cruz La Laguna. Some hotels offer free access to kayaks and paddleboards (Free Cerveza Hostel and Sunset Lodge are two examples).
You can also hire a paddleboard or kayak from Los Elementos Adventure Center in Santa Cruz. For about $8 an hour, you can have fun kayaking along the sheltered bay or taking part in a variety of activities including swimming, rock climbing, cliff jumping and archery.
The town is also home to Tzantizotz Nature Reserve, which is a great place for wildlife watching and photography. It is also a great spot to go for a hike.
