If you’re a mindful traveler and are looking for an alternative to overtourism in Venice, then Treviso is a great option. This quaint town offers a great combination of history, art and culture.
It also has a number of museums, including Museo Luigi Bailo, which houses a great collection of historic and contemporary artworks. In addition, the Gallerie delle Prigioni is housed in an old Habsburg prison that was transformed by Luciano Benetton’s Imago Mundi art initiative.
1. Piazza dei Signori
The main square of Treviso, Piazza dei Signori, is a great place to take a walk and people-watch. There are plenty of cafes with outdoor seating to enjoy a coffee or drink, plus a variety of shops and restaurants on all sides of the square.
There are some interesting architecture around the square too, with Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and other styles mixed in. One building, for example, has a lovely arch that can be glimpsed over a walkway.
If you’re a fan of art, the Luigi Bailo Museum is worth a visit. It contains a huge collection of paintings from different periods.
Another place to check out is the Chiesa di San Vito e Santa Lucia, which has a fantastic view of the city. This church is the city’s oldest and also has some impressive statues and artworks.
2. Buranelli Canals
The Buranelli Canals, also called Middle Channel, are one of the best-loved features of Treviso and it is easy to see why. Named after a family of important traders from the Venetian island of Burano, it diverts part of the water from Pegorile into the heart of the city and it is also known for its little pedestrian bridge over it.
This is a very romantic spot where you can admire the many buildings on both sides of the canal. In addition to the pedestrian bridge there are a number of shops and restaurants where you can taste some local dishes.

3. Fish Market
Located on a small island in the middle of Buranelli Canals, the Fish Market (Pescheria) is one of the most atmospheric sights in Treviso. Surrounded by elegant old buildings, it's a lively place where you can get a glimpse of local life.
It also houses several beautiful sculptures, including a mermaid and a fish. This part of the city is a great place to experience authentic Italian culture, so make sure you stop by!
If you're a foodie then the Fish Market is the perfect place to stock up on fresh and local produce. There's no service charge and the menu changes daily. You can get everything from ravioli stuffed with locally-grown radicchio and smoked ricotta to plump gnocchi with rich duck ragu and porcini risotto.
Another fascinating feature of the town is its ancient city walls. While not as grand as Venice, these medieval walls are a great place to explore on a sunny day and you may even run into some outdoor events here during the summer.
4. Chiesa di San Vito e Santa Lucia
Located right in the center of the city, Chiesa di San Vito e Santa Lucia is a fascinating church that is a great place to visit on your trip to Treviso. Designed in the late 1300s for multiple purposes, it still carries much of its original character and charm today.
Its central area contains a stunning fountain, which is decorated with beautiful mermaid and fish sculptures. The fountain was commissioned in 1559 by the mayor of Treviso, and is a must-see if you’re visiting this area.
The church also features a crypt, which is a beautiful place to explore. Its walls are painted with frescoes of Saints. Moreover, there are a few ancient relics inside the church. You can see an altar from the Roman era, as well as other religious artifacts. Lastly, the church is surrounded by a beautiful garden. This is the perfect place to relax and enjoy a peaceful stroll.
