Located on the Yucatan Peninsula, Cancun is one of Mexico’s most popular tourist destinations. The hotel zone offers a variety of luxury resorts, restaurants and nightlife.
The city’s main attractions are primarily centered around its beaches and resorts. Nevertheless, there are many other experiences that you should include in your Cancun itinerary.
Cenotes
The Yucatan Peninsula is home to thousands of cenotes, also known as cave-like sinkholes. These are naturally formed by limestone rock eroding away to expose the water beneath it.
These are the perfect places to cool off in Mexico and swim, snorkel or even scuba dive in their crystal-clear waters.
The caves are usually dark and you need a guide to enter but the fully-open cenotes are like natural swimming pools or ponds surrounded by jungle flora and fauna. These are often near ground level so you can jump straight into them without climbing down stairs.
Chichen Itza
Chichen Itza is one of Mexico’s most well-known and beautiful relics of the ancient Maya civilization. It’s a must-see if you’re in Cancun and want to experience the history of this beautiful country.
There are plenty of tours that take you to the site and a nearby cenote. However, we recommend visiting this ancient city on your own if you can!
Coba
The Coba ruins are the largest settlement of the Classic Mayan period on the Yucatan Peninsula, and it's an excellent place to visit for history buffs. It's not as popular as Chichen Itza or Tikal, but it's worth a visit.
The main pyramid, Nohoch Mul, is a must-see, but there are plenty of other ancient structures to explore. Taking a tour is a great option to get around quickly and easily, but you can also rent a bike or bici-taxi for a more relaxed experience.
Boulevard Kukulcan
One of the most popular things to do in Cancun is to visit Boulevard Kukulcan. The area is filled with stores, restaurants, a Mayan museum, and much more.
It is a place that you could spend an entire day and never get bored! It is a great way to experience all that Cancun has to offer.
This street is also famous for its shops, which sell everything from hats to T-shirts. It is a safe place to shop, though it can be quite busy at times.
Cancun Scenic Tower
Cancun is a popular destination in Mexico with a lot to offer visitors. It’s a bustling resort city anchored on the Yucatan Peninsula with two distinct areas: El Centro and Zona Hotelera.
There are a variety of exciting activities you can do while you’re here, such as ziplining, snorkeling and stand-up paddleboarding. But if you’re looking for a fun and thrilling experience, we highly recommend a Jetpack Adventure tour!
Aside from a fun and thrilling day of ziplining, you’ll also enjoy a relaxing boat trip to Isla Mujeres. This island is known for its picture-perfect beaches and gorgeous coral reefs, and it’s easy to see why so many people love it!
Isla Mujera
Isla Mujeres is a tiny island off the coast of Cancun and it’s a tropical paradise with lots of beautiful beaches. It’s also home to the largest underwater museum in the world and a turtle sanctuary.
You can get there by ferry from Cancun. You can also choose to go on a full-day catamaran tour, where you’ll spend the day swimming and snorkeling.
There are also some other fun things to do on Isla Mujeres. We especially liked visiting Punta Sur, the rocky outcrop at the southern tip of the island. It’s home to a lighthouse, the remains of a Mayan temple to Ixchel and a sanctuary for sea turtles.
