Despite its small size, Isla Mujeres packs a punch. Here, you can enjoy everything from pristine beaches to delicious seafood.
A 30-minute ferry ride transports travelers from Cancun’s hotel zone to Isla Mujeres, a small island that boasts some of the best things to see and to do in Mexico.
1. Visit the Underwater Museum
The Underwater Museum is one of the most sought after Cancun attractions. It’s located in Cancun National Marine Park and contains more than 500 sculptures by British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor.
The sculptures were installed using pH neutral marine concrete to stimulate coral growth and provide a habitat for fish, crustaceans, and other sea creatures. Eventually the sculptures will transform into a natural reef ecosystem.
Founded by Jaime Gonzalez Canto and the artist Jason deCaires Taylor, MUSA was conceived as a conservation project to help restore the local reefs. The museum is made up of hundreds of human-sized sculptures that are anchored into the ocean floor.
The largest of the sculptures is called “The Silent Evolution,” a collection of more than 450 life-size figurines that resemble harmonious coexistence of humans. Another is an actual submerged Volkswagen Beetle called “Anthropocene.”
2. Take a Boat Tour
There are plenty of ways to see Isla Mujeres, but one of the best is by boat. Take a day trip from Cancun and enjoy the tropical beaches and stunning turquoise waters of this beautiful island.
Choose a tour that suits your needs and travel style. There are small group tours, as well as private cruises that can be customised to your preferences.
You can also choose a boat tour that includes snorkeling. There are two reefs on Isla Mujeres, La Cadenita and El Farito, both of which are bursting with marine life.
After the tour, you can relax on the beach and enjoy a cold drink from the open bar. Then, you can enjoy a hearty buffet lunch at a private beach club. You can also visit local souvenir shops and explore the streets of Isla Mujeres.
3. Visit Punta Sur
The south side of Isla Mujeres is home to Punta Sur, an incredible cliffside park that blends nature and art. It features one-of-a-kind sculptures, Mayan ruins, a lighthouse, and breathtaking ocean views.
You can visit Punta Sur in a golf cart, on foot, or by bike (or even in a taxi). We recommend starting your adventure early in the morning, and remember to bring water and sunscreen!
Often overshadowed by Playa Norte, Punta Sur is a magical hidden gem. It’s known for being the first place in Mexico to see the sun each day, so it’s a great way to kick off your vacation!
Punta Sur is also home to the Ixchel Mayan Goddess Temple, which is believed to have been dedicated to the goddess of fertility and love. Take a tour of the temple and learn about the history behind the ruins. It’s a must-see on Isla Mujeres! Besides the temple, you’ll find beautiful Mayan ruins around this area.
4. Rent a Golf Cart
A golf cart rental is one of the easiest, safest, and most popular ways to get around Isla Mujeres. The island is small, so it's possible to drive completely around in a golf cart within about two hours.
It's also a good way to see some of the lesser-known corners of the island, like the west coast road between the lagoon and the ocean. This area is tucked away from the main town and gives you a chance to take in the island's natural beauty, with crashing waves and craggy rocks on the opposite side of the road.
If you're planning to rent a golf cart for the day, make sure to book it in advance. Especially during high season or holiday weekends.
