If you are planning a trip to Nepal, there are many places you can visit. From Buddhist shrines to Durbar Squares, there are a lot of things to see and do.

Kathmandu is one of the best cities to visit in Nepal. This ancient capital city is famous for its temples, shrines and statues.

1. Boudhanath Stupa

One of the most famous heritage sites in Nepal, Boudhanath is a must-see destination for both local and international travelers. Despite being a religious site, it has a peaceful atmosphere that attracts visitors from all walks of life.

This spherical monument is the largest in Asia, and stands as a testament to Buddhist faith. A natural mandala of peace and beauty, it exudes a sacred energy that has been cherished by Tibetan Buddhists for centuries.

Several monasteries surround Boudhanath, where you can gain insight into Buddhist teachings and traditions. The area is also home to numerous shops that offer a variety of Tibetan handicrafts, art and souvenirs.

The stupa is situated on a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so be sure to take the time to explore the surrounding area. The streets and alleys are lined with colorful homes, Buddhist monasteries, street vendors and restaurants.

2. Swayambhunath Stupa

The Swayambhunath Stupa is one of the oldest and most enigmatic Buddhist sites in Nepal. It is located on a hillock near Kathmandu, and has many Hindu and Buddhist shrines and temples surrounding it.

As the two religions mingled in Swayambhunath, the complex became a symbol of harmony. The Hindu goddess Harati (Ajima) and the Buddha are both worshipped there, and the site is brimming with chaityas made of stone, wood, and copper.

The main stupa houses a beautiful golden spire, with thirteen gilded disks representing the 13 steps to enlightenment. The spire also features the Buddha’s “all-seeing eyes” in orange, white, and blue colors, facing four directions. In the center of the eyes, the nose looks like a question mark, which signifies the unity of all things.

3. Lumbini

Known as the birthplace of Gautama Buddha, Lumbini is a sacred site for Buddhist and Hindu pilgrims. Located in Nepal’s Rupandehi District, this historic destination is 250 kilometers away from Kathmandu, and is visited by thousands of Buddhists and tourists each year.

During your visit, you can explore the Ashoka Pillar, ancient ruins of Stupas and a Bodhi tree decorated with prayer flags situated beside a sacred pond. You can also see the ruins of King Suddhodhana’s palace.

The enchanting beauty of this site evokes feelings of tranquillity and spirituality. This is why it remains a favored retreat for those who practice Buddhism and is considered one of the most important spiritual destinations in the world.

4. Chitwan National Park

Located in the central Terai, the national park of Chitwan is one of the best places in Nepal to see wildlife. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is home to one-horned rhinos, Bengal tigers and numerous other animal species.

The tiger and rhino populations are recovering from the brink of extinction, thanks to smart conservation practices. There are plenty of other mammals to spot, including elephants, gharial crocodiles, sloth bears and a range of birds.

Pokhara is undoubtedly one of the best places to visit in Nepal. This awe-inspiring city is home to the beautiful Phewa Lake, pristine mountain views, and is the base for some of the country’s most famous treks.

  • Whether you are an adventurer, history buff, spiritual traveller, or nature lover, there’s something here for everyone. The best part is that Pokhara is also a perfect place for relaxation.
  • To see the stunning vistas of snow-capped mountains, get up early to watch the sunrise from Sarangkot Viewpoint. You can even hire a taxi to take you there from town.
