One of the world's most iconic palaces, the Alhambra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is not to be missed on your trip to Granada. The sprawling grounds and enchanting gardens are sure to impress you time and time again.

Visiting the Alhambra is best done on a guided tour so you can have the full experience. These tours are often a little more expensive than a standard visit but they'll give you the opportunity to learn more about the monument and its history from an expert local guide.

1. The Nasrid Palaces

The magnificent Nasrid Palaces, part of Alhambra complex, are a must-see for any visitor. Tickets for these palaces are limited and can sell out in peak summer months - up to 90 days in advance!

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is split into three independent areas: the Mexuar (public), Comares Palace (official residence of the king) and the Palace of Lions (private area for the king and his family). The artistic differences between these areas make the Nasrid Palaces a truly unique experience.

2. The Alcazaba

One of the most famous Moorish monuments in the world, Granada’s Alhambra is not just a palace but also a window into Spain’s long and fascinating history. The complex, which was a stronghold of the Islamic sultanates of Andalusia for 700 years, is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Two of the original three walls remain, with over 100 towers and three palaces. Its location was paramount, with views out over the city and surrounding countryside as watchmen could spot any potential invaders from an elevated vantage point.

3. The Generalife Gardens

The Generalife Gardens are a network of water-fountains and carefully-clipped bushes criss-crossed with gravel paths. They are a beautiful place to relax.

The gardens are a welcome contrast to the stark walls and towers of the Alhambra. They also have an important role to play in the history of the Alhambra.

In the Nasrid era, the Generalife Gardens were the personal retreat of the king and his retainers. The king would climb up the stairway, known as Escalera de Agua, to pray and enjoy the view of Granada.

4. The Alhambra Palace

Located on a hill in Granada, the Alhambra was first built as a fortress. The castle was built on top of old Roman battlements and became a more elaborate structure during the Nasrid period in the 13th century.

During this period, many artistic elements were added to the palace’s interiors including plaster-casting techniques, ceramic tile designs and intricate carved woodwork. Historians say Nasrid, Maghribi (North African) and Castilian Christian artisans combined their styles to create the Alhambra’s richly decorated interiors.

5. The Alcaiceria

The Alcaiceria, a narrow street lined with gaudy souvenir shops, is the remnant of Granada's original Moorish silk market. This claustrophobic warren of alleyways originally housed over 200 silk stalls.

Today, the Alcaiceria is mainly a tourist trap, but if you take the time to explore the passageways, there are some gems to be found. Think hand-painted ceramics, inlaid wood and stained glass lamps.

6. The Alcaiceria Gardens

The Alcaiceria Gardens are a pleasant contrast to the busy palaces and fortresses that make up Alhambra. These green spaces are the perfect place to relax, soak up some sunshine and appreciate the amazing architecture of this UNESCO World Heritage site.

This former market is a must-see while in Granada, especially if you’re interested in learning more about Islamic culture. Once home to a bustling bazaar selling silk, spices and silverware, it’s still an interesting place to explore.

7. The Alcaiceria Tower

One of the most popular monuments in Spain, Alhambra is a must-see for any visitor to Granada. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to ancient fortifications, decadent palaces and stunning gardens.

Make sure you buy your tickets in advance and choose a time that suits your schedule. Ticket sales are limited to 6,600 per day, so be prepared for a busy morning or afternoon.

8. The Alcazaba Tower

The Alcazaba Tower, aka Torre del Homenaje, is the tallest structure in the Alhambra and offers incredible views of Granada. This robust square-shaped tower features battlements (parapet with openings at regular intervals) and merlons (construction that projects upwards) on all four sides of its terrace.

This strategically located tower served as both a defensive and offensive structure. Its crenels and embrasures allowed defenders to mount weapons and respond from above during an attack.
