Whether you're looking for a relaxing beach vacation or an adventure filled getaway, Tarifa has something for everyone. Known for its stunning beaches and incredible windsurfing, the Southern most city of Spain and mainland Europe is a must-see destination!

One of the most famous beaches in Tarifa is Playa de Los Lances. Located on the Atlantic and Mediterranean sides, this huge beach is divided by a land bridge that's a popular spot for kite surfing.

1. Playa de Los Lances

Playa de Los Lances is one of the most popular beaches in Tarifa and a must-visit for surfers and kitesurfers. It offers views of the Strait of Gibraltar and Africa.

It’s also known for the gathering of birds as they wait to cross the Strait of Gibraltar to Africa. This means it’s a great place to watch kites and eagles as they fly over the beach in search of their next adventure.

The beach has a wide range of activities to offer, including surfing, water sports and sunbathing. It’s also home to a variety of beach bars and cafes.

2. Puerta de Jerez

Located just a short walk from the beach, the historic center of Jerez offers visitors a glimpse into another era. The city is home to a cathedral, an 11th-century Moorish fortress, and a wealth of historical buildings.

It also boasts a number of sherry wine bodegas, which are worth visiting for a tour of the property and a sample of this famous fortified wine. Some wineries offer tours in English, so it's a good idea to book ahead if you want to take part.

Another place to visit in Jerez is the Mercado de Abastos, a market that focuses on local food. It's the perfect place to pick up fresh seafood and other produce.

3. Iglesia de San Mateo

Built in 1506 on the remains of a mosque, Iglesia de San Mateo is the main church of Tarifa. It was originally intended to be a Gothic building, but it has been reconstructed several times over the centuries and now features rib-vaulting and Renaissance elements.

This large, soaring church is one of the best examples of Logrosan’s Gothic art. It’s a testament to the demographic and urban growth that was experienced by Tarifa after the Christian victory in the Battle of Salado and the conquest of Algeciras by Muhammed V of Granada in 1369.

The interior features a soaring wooden altarpiece, and a fine collection of cedarwood sculptures of Biblical figures. Many of them are lifelike and beautifully crafted. In addition, there are some impressive stained glass windows.

4. Mirador El Estrecho

A must-see for anyone visiting Tarifa is Mirador El Estrecho, a picturesque overlook that offers enrapturing panoramic views of the Strait of Gibraltar and beyond to Africa. Moreover, it is also one of the best places to watch whales and dolphins in Spain between April and October, when they are able to swim between the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea.

In addition to the spectacular views, Mirador El Estrecho is also home to many historical and cultural attractions. Among them are the old Roman ruins of Baelo Claudia, an important Roman settlement that is now located in Bolonia and dates back to the second century BC.

5. Castillo de Guzman el Bueno

The Castillo de Guzman el Bueno is a fortified castle that was built to protect Tarifa from pirates and Moors. It was named after its governor, Alonso Perez de Guzman.

  • The oblong-shaped castle is divided into two high towers. From the western one, you can see Isla de las Palomas and Morocco, while from the eastern one you can admire the port and city centre of Tarifa.
  • In the XVII century it was used as a garrison for Spanish troops. Today it's a Cultural Monument and a great place to take in the views from the hilltop.
  • For something a bit more action-packed, head to the nearby sugar-white beaches of Playa de Los Lances or kitesurfing hotspot Playa de Valdevaqueros. You can also go whale-watching in the Strait of Gibraltar.
