Liseberg amusement park
Liseberg is Sweden's largest amusement park, attracting over three million visitors each year. The 260-acre park opened in 1923 to celebrate Gothenburg's 300th anniversary and now features a wide range of attractions, rides and activities, including restaurants, games, music stages, dance floors and indoor arenas.
There are plenty of thrill rides to choose from, too. Among the world-class options are the venerable Balder wooden roller coaster; AtmosFear, Europe's tallest free-fall tower; and the Valkyria, Europe's longest dive coaster, which plunges you a dizzying 50m (164ft.) into the air before blasting you back down.
There are also plenty of more gentle attractions to enjoy, like carousels and fairy-tale castles. Plus, there are outdoor dance floors and adventure playgrounds. There's even an annual Halloween season and Christmas celebrations at Liseberg.
Maritiman
Floating on the Gota River, moored next to Packhuskajen in central Gothenburg, Maritiman is one of the city’s most popular attractions. It consists of 19 water vessels and holds the distinction of being the world’s largest floating museum.
Besides offering a fun and educational day out, it’s also home to a variety of other interesting sights and activities. You can visit a full-size replica of the East Indiaman ship that sank off the coast of Gothenburg in 1745 or admire Sweden’s only preserved Viking ship.
In addition, you can get a good look at Gothenburg’s naval heritage on a sightseeing cruise along the Gota River. You can also take a Paddan boat tour that shows you many of Gothenburg’s historic buildings, parks and gardens.
There’s an armada of 20 museum vessels at Maritiman and the ships themselves are interactive museums that you can walk around. You can climb aboard the submarine Nordkaparen or the destroyer Smaland to learn about their military past.
Volvo museum
Located in an industrial park outside Volvo's home town of Gothenburg, the Volvo museum is a must-see for any Swedish vehicle enthusiast. Displays take visitors through the brand's history from 1920 to present, including forays into trucks, buses and concept cars.
The museum also holds a comprehensive archive of historic documents and pictures that help tell the story of how Volvo went from one of Sweden's most successful export companies to an international car manufacturer with a world-class reputation. The collection contains around 100 vehicles and engines, with a selection of advertising films from the past available to watch.
The museum spans 8000 square meters and depicts the evolution of an extremely well-known automobile company, Volvo, since 1927. It features a diverse array of Volvo manufactured automobiles including cars, trucks, buses, construction equipment, marine engines and unique concept vehicles. It is also home to the Volvo Ocean Race and Volvo Golf Experience exhibitions.
Skansen Kronan
Skansen Kronan is an ancient Swedish citadel in Gothenburg that offers sweeping views over the city. Located in the Haga district, it is one of the most popular attractions in Sweden.
The fortress is a great place to learn about Swedish history. Completed in 1697, the citadel was built to defend against Danish invasions. It was designed by Erik Dahlbergh and consists of high walls that are more than four meters thick.
In addition to providing excellent views, the fort also features a number of museums and attractions. The museum displays art from the 15th century to contemporary pieces, and features a special emphasis on Nordic art.
The fort also hosts weddings and private parties. It also has a restaurant and a cafe, and is open to the public. It is a good choice for a day out with the family or friends.
