In Bangkok, there are many fun things to do. From the iconic temples and palaces to the more laid back markets, there are something for everyone!
If you have a little time on your hands, take a canal cruise along one of the city’s rivers. It’s a great way to get some of the best views in the city.
1. Grand Palace
Bangkok’s Grand Palace is one of the most visited sites in Thailand and has been a favourite among travellers since its construction in 1782. This complex of buildings is home to the Emerald Buddha temple, a symbol of Thailand’s spiritual centre.
Aside from the main temple, there are other royal structures to explore within its walls. Throughout the years, the complex has undergone many changes and improvements.
The complex is also home to the reclining 46-meter king-sized Buddha. This temple is an absolute must-visit for anyone in Bangkok!
Visitors are expected to dress modestly and respectfully. This means men must wear a shirt and pants, while women must avoid revealing clothing such as shorts, three-quarter length trousers or mini skirts.
Alternatively, you can borrow a sarong to cover yourself up from a booth at the entrance with a refundable deposit of around 200 bahts. This will help to keep you off the busy queues and ensure your visit runs smoothly.
2. Chatuchak Market
Chatuchak Market is the pulsating heart of Bangkok's shopping scene, offering something for everyone from stalls selling local souvenirs to a vast selection of street food. It's also the place to find a bargain on local produce.
It's possible to get lost in the maze of alleyways and tiny stalls, but a map can help you make your way around. Pick up one from the market's information booth or download a free version online.
The clothing section dominates, with the stalls showcasing everything from punk-inspired streetwear to tourist-sized clothes. The market also offers a range of handicrafts, and several sections specialise in chunky silver jewellery.
3. Shopping Malls
Bangkok's many shopping malls are a popular way to spend a day. These bustling complexes offer everything from high-end designer boutiques to a wide variety of stores and restaurants.
Some of the most popular Bangkok malls include Siam Paragon and Central World. Both of these malls are very large and feature all the major brands you'd expect.
You'll also find a number of high end restaurants and cinemas at these malls. They are a great way to spend a day and meet with friends.
Another mall in Bangkok that is worth a visit is MBK Center, which is a cross between a mall and a market. It has a large number of vendors selling cheap goods and imitations, but there are also plenty of discount stores. MBK also has an excellent food court and Tops supermarket for buying groceries.
4. Nightlife
After the sun has set on its horizons, Bangkok turns into one of the most vibrant and vivacious cities in Asia. Tourists from all over the world flock to the city every year to enjoy a fun night out with their friends.
- The nightlife in Bangkok is not all rowdy and naughty; the city offers an array of swanky rooftop bars, lively clubs, and hip cocktail bars. If you’re looking for a more sophisticated evening, try out Above Eleven on Sukhumvit Road or The Speakeasy, a gin bar with 1920s prohibition-era decor.
- In addition to the usual red light district, Bangkok also has Soi Cowboy, another lively and entertaining area with Go Go bars, Thai Ladyboy or Cabaret dances, and strip clubs. The girls here are less pushy than in Nana Plaza or Pat Pong, and drinks are cheaper too.
