Arenal Volcano is arguably the single most jaw-dropping natural highlight in Costa Rica. It’s also a major draw for tourists, year-round, thanks to its impressive array of adventure activities.

Hiking around the volcano’s lava fields inside the park is an unforgettable experience. Not only are these trails stunningly picturesque, but they serve as a somber reminder of Arenal’s devastating eruptions in 1968.

1. Volcano Crater C

There are several reasons why you’ll want to spend time in the Arenal region. One of them is the range of incredible hiking opportunities.

Whether you’re after an adrenaline-pumping hike or something more relaxing, the national park has a trail for everyone. But it’s best to check with a tour company before deciding on your adventure.

For instance, some tours offer combination adventures that mix in activities such as wildlife floats with hikes.

The best time to visit Arenal is during the dry season, which runs from November to April. During this time, the weather is clearer and you’ll have better views of the volcano.

2. La Fortuna Waterfall

A popular Costa Rica attraction, La Fortuna Waterfall is a must-visit on your Arenal Volcano itinerary. Set within a biological reserve inside the national park, the waterfall is a breathtaking sight to see.

Hike down several hundred steps to reach the base of the falls and enjoy a close-up view of the cascading water. There is a small swimming area just beneath the waterfall, but beware that the water can be rough in the height of the wet season.

To beat the tour crowds, visit early or late in the day. It’s also best to go at the start of the dry season, which is December to April.

3. Arenal Volcano National Park

If you’re looking for adventure and a lush rainforest, look no further than Arenal Volcano National Park. With an exciting range of activities, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is an excellent choice for anyone wanting to get off the beaten path and explore some natural wonders.

You can visit the park on your own or with a tour. These tours allow you to discover everything Arenal has to offer in a single day, and can be a great way to save time and money.

During your visit to the park, you can experience the dense jungle and take short trails that explore the lava fields from previous eruptions. You’ll also have the opportunity to spot wildlife, such as sloths and white-faced capuchin monkeys. And you’ll be able to check out the nearby Venado Caves, an underground site filled with stalactites and stalagmites formed 20 million years ago by tectonic movements.

4. La Fortuna Hot Springs

La Fortuna is home to a number of hot springs attractions where you can soak in mineral-rich thermal water that comes from the Arenal Volcano. Some of these hot springs pump that water up from the ground into pools, while others create a series of connected pools where thermal water flows freely from one pool to the next.

Several hotels around Arenal offer in-house hot springs as part of their guest experience. Some are large, luxurious, and more expensive than others; some are smaller and budget-friendly.

The Paradise Hotel, for example, offers a great value for its 5-star guest rooms and mid-range rates for its more minimal alternatives. While it doesn’t have the luxury and amenities of its top-tier counterparts, its straightforward design and personal touches make it a nice middle-of-the-road option for travelers looking to enjoy a warm-water dip without breaking the bank.

5. Arenal Lake

For years, the quaint town of La Fortuna has served as a jumping off point for travelers eager to experience the plethora of activities that are available in and around Arenal Volcano. The region has long been popular with eco-minded travelers in search of jungle hiking, water sports and wildlife sightings.

The region is also home to Lake Arenal, a large body of water surrounded by verdant mountain ridges. It is a popular place for boating and fishing, as well as wind surfing and kayaking.

Visitors can explore the national park on their own, but a guided tour is the best option. The tours typically include transportation to the park and an array of exciting activities centered around the volcano and surrounding rainforest.
