A confident medley of Bohemian history, Moravian charm and Slavic panache, the Czech Republic is a destination that can’t be missed. From the medieval city cores of Ceske Budejovice and Cesky Krumlov to the eye-watering cave systems and mountain landscapes of the backcountry, this landlocked country is full of magical wonders.
Ceske Budejovice
Founded and fortified in 1265 by King Premysl Otakar II, Ceske Budejovice is rich in medieval architecture. It has one of the largest arcaded town squares in Europe and a Baroque Samson's fountain.
You can also take a cruise on the Czech Republic's national river, the Vltava, from this town. This is a great way to see the city's historic centre and enjoy some local beer.
Another popular activity in the area is to visit the castle. This Neo-Gothic style castle is about a 20-minute drive from the center and is worth a visit.
This castle was built in the 14th century and is a great place to explore from the outside or tour inside if you want a little more history. You can even climb the tower and view it from above!
Cesky Krumlov
The UNESCO World Heritage site of Cesky Krumlov is known for its medieval castle and beautiful buildings. It is a popular destination for day trips from Prague and an excellent choice for a romantic Czech getaway.
- In the city center, you will find narrow cobbled streets dotted with medieval buildings and charming nooks. The old town is almost car-free, so you can walk around and admire everything.
- You should also check out the picturesque castle garden, which is often overlooked by tourists. Here you can stroll past ancient linden trees, beautiful flowerbeds and pretty statues.
- Another interesting museum is the Regional Museum, which covers the history of the town and its residents. It also features folk art and some interesting artifacts.
- The city has a museum of torture as well, and you can learn more about the ways in which criminals were punished. The museum also houses some interesting exhibits and a cafe.
Telc
One of the most romantic places to visit in the Czech Republic, Telc is a beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Site. This charming town is often overlooked by tourists but is truly worth the trip.
You’ll instantly fall in love with the main square of Zachariase z Hradce, which is lined with magnificent Renaissance and Baroque burgher houses. These brightly coloured buildings look like they belong in a fairy tale, and the arcades filled with little shops are a perfect place to pause and take pictures!
Located in the middle of this town, Hotel Telc is a great option for those looking for a down to detail equipped boutique hotel. It’s very comfortable, clean and a nice place to stay with a delicious breakfast and good service from the staff.
Pilsen
Pilsen, the Czech Republic's fourth largest city, may be famous for its world-famous beer but it also offers plenty of other things to see and do. In fact, Pilsen was named 2015 European Capital of Culture and the town is filled with a fascinating history that goes beyond its famed breweries.
For starters, the historic center is packed with burghers' houses, Baroque churches, and a beautiful garden in Republic Square. Take your time to explore all of the sights and enjoy the beautiful UNESCO listed buildings.
The Great Synagogue is another iconic landmark in Pilsen and its sheer size and impressive exterior and interior design really stands out. It's a fascinating building that you should not miss!
Alternatively, hop on a tour of the Pilsen Historic Underground and don your hard hat to explore an underground network of passages that were built under the city in the 14th century. These tunnels were where food and ice was stored, but also served as a means of escape should the town be under siege.
