There are plenty of things to see and to do in Oberhausen. From museums and art galleries to water parks and family-friendly attractions, there is something for everyone.
In the heart of the city is a repurposed gas holder that has become an impressive exhibition space. This 117.5-metre-high landmark also offers great views of the entire Ruhr area.
1. The Gasometer
Once a barrel-shaped gas storage tower, this 117.5m-high landmark became one of the most popular art and exhibition spaces in Germany. Its 384-foot cylinder space hosts headline-making exhibitions that draw big crowds.
Take a ride to the top of the Gasometer by foot or elevator, and admire the views over Oberhausen and the whole Ruhr region. The attraction is also a must for those who enjoy industrial heritage and history.
Located next to the Gasometer is Siedlung Eisenheim, one of the earliest company towns in the Ruhr area. The 1860s saw a joint metallurgy and coalmining venture bring thousands of families to this neighbourhood. Today it's listed as a monument and a stop on the Ruhr Industrial Heritage Trail.
2. Slinky Springs to Fame
A must-see attraction in Oberhausen is Slinky Springs to Fame, a colourful pedestrian bridge crossing the Rhine-Herne Canal between Kaisergarten and Emscher Island. The 406 metre long bridge is a work of art, designed by Frankfurter artist Tobias Rehberger.
The bridge was inspired by the helical spring toy Slinky, invented by American engineer Richard James in the 1940s. It can perform many tricks such as travelling down a flight of steps end-over-end, or appear to levitate for a short time after it is dropped.
The 406 metre long bridge is covered with more than 400 rings made of steel and features a spiral motif evocative of a Slinky toy. At night, the bridge is illuminated with different colours, attracting visitors.
3. Legoland Discovery Centre
Located in a family-friendly leisure and shopping center, LEGOLAND Discovery Centre is an absolute must-see attraction in Oberhausen. During the two to three hours that you spend inside, you'll experience an exciting journey through the colorful world of LEGO(r) where imagination and creativity are allowed to run wild.
You'll also be able to explore a miniature version of the Ruhr area in Miniland. And the 4D cinema will surprise you with many exciting surprises and fascinating special effects - 3D is so yesterday!
The family attraction is geared towards children aged three to 10 years old. There's a Duplo jungle and various rides for the little ones. But there are also attractions for older kids, like the Lego Friends area and the Royal Adventure ride.
4. Nationalpark Centro
Located at the heart of the New Mitte, Nationalpark Centro is a major attraction in Oberhausen. It's one of the largest shopping centres in Europe and is home to a large number of popular brands.
The centre also has a multiplex cinema and a 400-metre promenade that leads to restaurants, bars and clubs. It's a great place to spend some time with friends or family while you're on holiday in Oberhausen.
At the opposite end of the canal-side promenade is the Legoland Discovery Centre, a children's theme park. It's a great place for kids to explore, and the rides are safe and fun for all ages.
