There are plenty of things to see and to do in Bamberg, Germany. This town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and there are lots of historical buildings that will make you feel like you're in a storybook village.

One of the things to do in this city is visit their museum. It has many different displays that will really help you understand the history of Bamberg.

1. Bamberger Dom

Located in the Old Town, this cathedral is one of Bamberg's most famous landmarks. It's known for its awe-inspiring architecture and quietness.

The cathedral was originally built in the early 1000s but unfortunately it suffered from fire damage and had to be rebuilt twice. The third and final construction was completed in 1237.

While visiting, don't miss out on a stroll through the Rococo garden. It features a cascade with hourly waterworks, an orangery, and numerous fine garden sculptures.

You can also sample smoked beer, called Rauchbier, which is brewed only in Bamberg. The flavor of this type of beer is distinctive and takes some getting used to.

2. Alte Hofhaltung

One of the best spots to see in Bamberg is the Alte Hofhaltung (Old Courtyard). This half-timbered courtyard looks like a scene from a movie.

It’s a historic complex of former houses and farm buildings that once belonged to the Episcopal palace from the 15th century. It features a vast courtyard surrounded by late Gothic arcaded frame.

In the center of this courtyard is a beautiful gate showing the Mother of God. She’s flanked by saints and bishops who are all framed by a model of the Cathedral at that time.

The museum in the courtyard is worth a visit, too, since it houses an impressive art collection that tells the history of the city. You can also get a taste of the local specialty: smoked beer!

3. Rose Garden

The rose garden in the inner courtyard of the New Residence, designed in 1733, is a delight for visitors. It's an oasis of beauty in the middle of the city and offers a wonderful view over Bamberg.

The garden features a variety of different flowers that bloom all year long. Besides roses, other beautiful blooms include salvia, gaura and butterfly bushes.

When planning your rose garden, consider the space you have available. Then, measure how many general sizes of roses you need.

Then, sketch out your design on paper and map out the areas you'll need for each plant to thrive. This will prevent headaches later on.

Bamberg

4. Altenburg Castle

Sitting on top of Bamberg’s highest hill, Altenburg Castle has been a part of the city’s history since at least the 12th century. Today, it’s a great place to get a glimpse of the city’s past and enjoy some fantastic views of the countryside.

This imposing fortress is a must-see on any trip to Bamberg. It’s a 30-minute walk from the city center and offers guided tours, a restaurant, and plenty of attractions.

In addition to the main building, there’s also the New Residence, which was the home of the prince-bishops until it was dismantled in 1802. Inside, you’ll find 40 magnificent rooms that were once filled with kings and queens.

5. Museum of History

The Historical Museum of Bamberg is a collection of art and history that tells the story of this World Heritage city. Housed in the Alte Hofhaltung, right next to the cathedral, it has a wealth of exhibits that trace the history and culture of Bamberg as far back as the medieval era.

The Bamberg Cathedral, known in German as the Bamberger Dom, is a massive stunning piece of architecture that is a must see. It was originally commissioned in the year 1002 by Emperor Heinrich II.

Another must do in Bamberg is the Franconian Brewery Museum, which explains the brewing process and how beer has been made in the region. It's also located in a monastery on Michaelsberg hill, so you'll have one of the best views in town!
