The Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion is an iconic Greek landmark that combines history, legend and stunning natural beauty. It’s a serious contender to be your must-visit attraction while in Athens!

Perched on a promontory above the Aegean Sea, this ancient structure dates back to 440 BC. It was constructed on top of an archaic temple that was destroyed during the Persian Wars.

1. Parking

Temple of Poseidon is a great spot to see a Greek sunset and enjoy the view from the top of the cliff. The site is located on Cape Sounion, about 43 miles (70 kilometers) southeast of Athens.

There are a number of ways to get to the site from Athens, including public transportation, a rental car, and taking an organized tour. Regardless of your choice, the drive to Sounion is one of the highlights of the trip.

The parking area near the entrance is free, but be sure to park safely. During the day it can be busy, especially at sunset as visitors arrive to watch the sun set behind the Temple of Poseidon.

2. Entry

If you’re looking for a great place to see a Greek temple in person, you’ll love visiting the Temple of Poseidon. This picturesque ruin is perched on a cliff overlooking the sea, offering amazing views of the Aegean Sea.

The temple was built between 444 and 440 BC, during the time of Pericles. It was constructed with Agrileza marble in Doric style, and only 15 of the original 34 columns have survived.

The temple was a tribute to Poseidon, god of the sea, who was famous for his ability to cause storms and earthquakes. It was also a symbol of hope for Athenians who were returning home after long sea voyages.

3. Excursion

Visiting the Temple of Poseidon is a popular excursion for those staying in Athens. Located about 43 miles (69 km) south of Athens, it's an easy day trip from the city with plenty to see and do.

The ancient site is open daily between 9:30 and sunset time. Depending on the season, it can get quite crowded.

One of the most spectacular views in Greece can be found here. The cliff of Cape Sounion is surrounded by the sea on three sides and offers an amazing panoramic view of the Aegean.

The ruins of the Temple of Poseidon can be seen from above, and on a clear day it's possible to spot seven islands. There's also a marble kouros statue and an impressive votive relief.

4. Weather

If you’re visiting this temple in the warmer months, you should enjoy a pleasant day. Expect a high temperature in the low to mid-seventies with plenty of sun to spare. If you’re planning to make a night time tour, prepare for the possibility of a biting wind and some rain.

The temple is a short drive from the main Cape Sounion parking lot, and is open from 9:30 until sunset with the last entry allowed 20 minutes before the sun goes down. The best time to visit is probably during the summer months between June and September. The site is also a popular spot for weddings and other special events, so be prepared to shell out some cash for a ticket. The most memorable sight is definitely the sunset, with the water and sky painted in hues of orange, yellow and pink.

5. Tips

About 70km south of Athens, the temple of Poseidon perches atop a craggy spur that plunges 65m to the sea. Built in 444 BC - the same year as the Parthenon - of marble from Agrilesa, it is a vision of gleaming white columns.

On a clear day, the islands of Kea, Kythnos and Serifos to the southeast can be seen, as well as Aegina and Peloponnese to the west. It is a place where sailors knew they were near home, and you can feel the sea’s magic when you stand here.

Aside from visiting the temple, you can also have a meal in a traditional taverna nearby or explore other archeological sites around Cape Sounion. Alternatively, you can book a tour that includes admission fees and a guide.
