Meteora is a must-see destination in Greece that has all the makings of an unforgettable trip. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and features some of the country’s most stunning hanging monasteries, which are truly awe-inspiring.

You won’t find anything else like them. These monasteries are built atop soaring sandstone peaks that have been sculpted by the earth.

1. How to Get There

The most convenient way to get to Meteora is by train, but there are also some bus options. These are less convenient than the train, but they're still possible for a day trip if you want to see the monasteries.

One of the best ways to get a full overview of all six monasteries is to walk around them. There are walking trails that weave their way up to each monastery, and you can find scenic viewpoints along the way too.

Another way to experience this unique landscape is to hike through the Hermit Caves of Badovas. These are believed to have been home to hermits in the 9th and 10th centuries, and you can take a tour led by local guides to learn more about these ancient caves.

2. Where to Stay

Meteora is one of Greece’s top bucket list destinations, and there are lots of lovely luxury hotels to splurge on. But if you want to visit this incredible spot without breaking the bank, there are also plenty of excellent options in the villages of Kalambaka and Kastraki at the foot of the Meteora rocks.

Kalambaka is the larger of the two villages and has a wide street full of hotels, hostels, cafes, terraces, bakeries and bars. Kastraki is smaller, feels a little more authentic and is closer to the monasteries and park.

3. What to See

A land of mystical rock pillars that reach into the sky and Byzantine monasteries that look to be floating in midair, Meteora is one of the world’s most extraordinary UNESCO sites. Explore its otherworldly landscape and mystical ambience on an expert-led tour.

The UNESCO-heritage site is home to 24 monasteries. But only six remain active today, each offering a unique experience of history and culture.

Visiting the monasteries is definitely one of the top things to do in Meteora. Alternatively, try taking a guided hiking trip, which allows you to hike from monastery to monastery and soak up the amazing views while learning more about the area’s fascinating history.

4. How to Get Around

Getting around Meteora is a big part of the experience, and there are many different transportation options. You can choose to take a guided tour, rent your own car, take public transport or book a private transfer.

Regardless of which way you choose to get to Meteora, there are a number of things that you should know before you go. For example, the weather can be extremely unpredictable in this region.

One of the best ways to see all of Meteora is to do some hiking. It will give you a chance to explore the monasteries in full and also to view the landscape in its entirety.

5. What to Eat

Upon entering Meteora, chef Jordan Kahn's new Hollywood restaurant, you’ll be greeted with an incense-scented gust of air. This is the beginning of a sensory experience that combines Tulum-meets-primordial-ooze interiors, instrumental deep house soundtrack and restorative communal eating quilted together from ancient cultures around the world.

For dinner, diners will want to try kokoretsi, lamb innards wrapped in intestines that are then broiled until crunchy. This is a delicacy that is traditionally eaten during Easter and takes a long time to prepare.

6. What to Do

Located in the Pindos Mountain range, Meteora is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that encompasses a series of enormous rocks rising majestically from the ground. The area is home to 6 Greek Orthodox monasteries perched on top of these immaculate rock peaks.

These monasteries are the main reason people visit Meteora, but there are so many other things to do in this enchanting region. From hiking between the monasteries to truffle-hunting, there are plenty of options.

If you’re not up for hiking yourself, join a guided tour that will take you between the monasteries. This is the best way to immerse yourself in the stunning scenery and experience this UNESCO World Heritage site at your own pace.
