Kalamata is a lesser known city that has a lot to offer. Located in the Peloponnese, it is a great destination to visit if you want to see some unique things.
Aside from its many historical sites, Kalamata also offers visitors an array of awesome activities. Whether you prefer to spend your time exploring a castle or soaking up the sun at one of the lovely beaches, Kalamata has something for everyone!
The Castle
In the northwestern part of Kalamata, on top of a rocky hill, is one of the city’s most significant attractions - the Castle. Built by the Franks in the beginning of the 13th century, it was once considered a mighty fortress.
Today, the imposing structure stands as an interesting example of medieval fortification architecture. It also offers stunning views of the city centre.
The castle has undergone a number of renovations, including new lighting systems and accessibility improvements. According to the Culture Minister, Lina Mendoni, this will make it a more welcoming place for visitors of all ages and backgrounds.
In addition to the Castle, there are a variety of other historical monuments in and around the city that will take you back in time. Whether you want to visit museums, ancient archaeological sites, or picturesque beaches, there’s something for everyone!
The Church of Panagia Ypapaniti
The Church of Panagia Ypapaniti, also known as the Metropolitan Church, is one of the largest cathedrals in Messinia. It was built in 1839 and consecrated in 1873. It is a traditional Byzantine style and houses the ancient and miraculous icon of Panagia.
The miracle working icon of Panagia Ypapanti is the patron saint of the city, and every year on February 2nd the people of Kalamata celebrate her with a great festivity. Afterwards the Icon is taken outside for everyone to come and pray.
The Church of Ypapanti is the most beautiful and well-preserved chapel in Kalamata. The marble carved iconostasis, which was painted by the nuns of Pantokratoras Monastery in Agros, as well as the three doors and the four Despotic icons are really impressive.
The Municipal Railway Park
Kalamata Municipal Railway Park is an open-air museum that is unique of its kind in Greece. It was established in 1986 but was not completed until 1990 due to the devastating earthquake that hit the city in September 1986.
It is a 54-ha park that includes a rich collection of railway exhibits coming from the Hellenic Railway Organization (OSE). These include one diesel and seven steam locomotives, three railcars, a metal footbridge 28 metres long, several railway elements and the building of the old station.
The Municipal Railway Park offers a number of activities for visitors to enjoy including a basketball court and volleyball courts, as well as a cafeteria on the ground floor of the old station. Children can also have fun on the skating area in the park during the winter season.
The Beach
Kalamata is a top destination in the Peloponnese for those who want to explore Greece far from overcrowded destinations such as Mykonos or Crete. It offers a fine sandy beach, interesting local attractions, and some unique culinary options.
- In addition, the region is famous for its premium olive oil and ancient buildings. You can also try water sports like sailing, sea kayaking, and scuba diving in the Messenian Gulf.
- The city’s main beach, Kalamata Beach, is lined with beach bars, restaurants, and shops. Its special paths for pedestrians and cyclists make it an ideal place to spend the day.
- If you’re a fan of the outdoors, there are many hiking trails in the nearby Taygetus mountain range. You can even do some mountain biking!
