If you're heading to Bergamo for the first time, there are a few things that you should definitely try and do. Firstly, we would recommend that you head up to the Citta Alta (upper town) as it's home to some of the city's most important landmarks.
One of the coolest vantage points in the city is the Torre Civica, also known as Campanone. This tower stands over 52 meters high and offers some of the best views in all of Bergamo.
1. Piazza Vecchia
Piazza Vecchia, also known as Citta Alta, has long been the heart of Bergamo and it is one of the best places to visit in this ancient city. Here you will find the Cathedral, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, the Colleoni Chapel and the Palazzo della Ragione.
The square is also home to the Torre Civica, a beautiful structure which is an important symbol of the city. You can climb to the top of the tower, where you can enjoy a breathtaking view over Bergamo!
In the center of the square, you will find a fountain called Fontana Contarini, which has been symbol of Bergamo for centuries. It is surrounded by buildings such as the palace of the Podesta, the library Angelo Mai and the Palazzo della Ragione.
2. Torre Civica
At 52 meters high, the Torre Civica is arguably one of the best sights in Bergamo. It’s a medieval symbol of the city, and its modern elevator gives you an incredible view from all angles.
It’s also home to the History Museum, which tells the story of Bergamo and the important events that have shaped its history. If you’re an art lover, you’ll be blown away by the beautiful artwork on display here.
The funicular is also a must, and it takes you up to the very top of the mountain where you can enjoy stunning views of both the Citta Alta (upper city) and the Citta Bassa (lower city). You’ll want to get here at sunset for the best shots, but even if you visit during the day, you’ll still find plenty of things to see.
3. Venetian Walls
The Venetian Walls are a fascinating part of Bergamo’s historic district. These Renaissance-era defences surround Citta Alta, and they’re punctured with ornate gates meant for road and foot traffic.
Take a walk along the walls, or sit back and admire the views. It’s one of the most popular things to do in Bergamo, and you can easily do it on your own or with a tour guide.
If you’re not up for the walk, there’s a funicular that can take you straight to the old citadel. Once there, make sure you stop at Porta Sant’Agostino, which features the Lion of Saint Mark.
4. Mercato delle Scarpe
The Mercato delle Scarpe is a square in the upper town and is home to an important market. The square is a great place to stop for food and drink during your trip.
The square is surrounded by many historical buildings and monuments that are of interest to visitors. It is a popular tourist destination and is also home to weekly markets.

5. Accademia Carrara di Belle Arti
The Accademia Carrara di Belle Arti is one of the best places to visit in Bergamo. The museum is housed inside an old historic palace and it is home to a great collection of works by some of the greatest Italian artists of the 15th century.
It’s a must-visit for any art lover! The collection includes pieces by renowned painters like Caravaggio, Botticelli, Bellini, Moroni and Lotto.
It also has a wonderful baptistery by Giambattista Tiepolo. You can walk along the ancient Roman roads that are still present here.
