Sintra is known for its castles and palaces, and it's a great destination to visit for a day trip from Lisbon. However, it can be quite busy in summer, so it's a good idea to purchase tickets in advance.

One of the most popular sites in Sintra, Pena Palace is an example of 19th-century Romantic architecture. Its colorful terraces, decorative battlements, and mythological statues are a visual extravaganza.

1. Pena Palace

A visual and cultural treat that will linger in your memory for a lifetime, Pena Palace is a must-see for any Sintra traveler. Located on top of a hill, the Romanticist castle contrasts vividly with the green landscape around it.

In addition to being one of the most famous landmarks in Sintra, it also offers visitors a vast forested park that can be explored on foot or by bike. The park is also home to a variety of monuments, statues and panoramic viewpoints.

When visiting the park, make sure to explore the romantic paths adorned with stone seats and winding pathways. King Fernando II had a big hand in designing these paths and also ordered that the gardens be filled with exotic plants from all over the world.

If you’re looking to visit Sintra Palace, it’s best to book an organized tour from Lisbon that includes the entrance ticket for the palace (with or without a guided tour). You’ll save money and avoid lines, so it’s well worth booking ahead!

2. Monserrate Palace

A short distance away from Sintra lies Monserrate Palace, a mansion that dates back to the 19th century. It features Moorish influences, but also highlights other European architectural styles.

Located in a park, the palace is well worth a visit for its romantic aura and stunning interiors. Rooms are adorned with period furniture, while ballrooms highlight tapestries and frescoes.

For a more intimate experience, you can stay overnight in the palace. This is a great option for couples or singles who want to indulge in a romantic retreat and experience the best of Portuguese cuisine.

The palace is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most visited monuments in Portugal. It is a must see in any trip to Sintra!

Pena Palace is one of the most popular sites in Sintra, so be sure to book your tickets in advance. It gets very busy and the queues can be long.

3. Quinta Regaleira

Quinta Regaleira is one of the most amazing monuments in Sintra, and a must see on any visit to this World Heritage Site! It is a lavish palace built between 1904 and 1910, during the final years of Portugal’s monarchy.

The palace was commissioned by the millionaire Antonio Augusto Carvalho Monteiro, a businessman and art collector. It was designed by Luigi Manini, an Italian theatrical designer.

It is a very big complex, featuring a 5-floor palace, an Initiation Well (an octagonal tower), a chapel and an enchanting garden of 4 acres!

There is a lot to see, so you should expect to spend at least 3 to 4 hours if you want to enjoy everything.

To avoid waiting in long lines, we recommend booking a tour with skip-the-line entrance tickets and a private local guide. These tours are a great way to learn all about Quinta Regaleira and enjoy a more intimate experience with your own personal guide!

4. Castelo dos Mouros

One of the main attractions in Sintra, Castelo dos Mouros is located on top of a mountain and offers breathtaking views over the town. The castle was built during the ninth century and it’s located in a forest, so it’s a bit difficult to access but it’s worth it.

It is the perfect place to relax and take in the natural beauty of Sintra. The palace is surrounded by a vast garden and there are six miles of trails that you can walk through to enjoy the beautiful scenery.

The Palace was built by King Fernando II who loved Sintra and saw in it an idyllic place to relax. It combines Gothic, Indian and Moorish influences and it features one of the most valued botanic gardens in Portugal.

The palace’s decor is eclectic with wall paintings, glazed tiles and cork. You will also find a variety of 19th-century furniture and stained glass windows.
