Whether you're a history buff, a culture vulture or just a fan of art, Ljubljana has a lot to offer. With a hilltop castle, several parks and green spaces to explore, and plenty of museums, there's something for everyone.
One of the most iconic sights in Ljubljana is Preseren Square. The main square is surrounded by beautiful churches and monuments. You can also visit the Franciscan Church with its amazing frescos.
Tivoli Park
Tivoli Park is a refreshing sprawl of green space right in the heart of Ljubljana's historic center. Originally laid out by French engineer Jean Blanchard in 1813, it's home to mansions, flower beds, fountains and wide walkways bordered by chestnut trees.
The park's eastern end is a short walk from Preseren Square, the Triple Bridge and Ljubljana Cathedral, among other highlights of Ljubljana Old Town. Many visitors say that it's a great spot for picnics, leisurely walks and jogs.
There are also a number of attractions inside the park, including the International Center for Graphic Arts, Tivoli Hall and the Museum of Modern History. During the summer, Tivoli Park is also host to several concerts and shows. These include opera, symphony and chamber music as well as pop and rock artists.
Ljubljana Castle
A short funicular railway will take you to the top of Ljubljana's Castle Hill, one of the city's most prominent landmarks. The castle, built in the 11th century on a 375m-high rocky hill overlooking the capital, has long been a military stronghold, and a place of religious and cultural significance.
As well as towers, a medieval Chapel of St George and the Castle Museum, there are a host of other attractions to see within the castle grounds. You can also climb the watchtower, which gives stunning views of the city below.
Ljubljana is a very walkable city, and the most interesting sights can be seen by walking along the cobblestone streets of the Old Town, which has been built around the emerald-green Ljubljanica River. The bridges over the river make for an easy and enjoyable stroll.
Ljubljana Old Town
Ljubljana's Old Town is a beautiful and charming area to explore. It's packed with amazing architecture and is a great place to get some holiday photos.
This central part of the city is also home to many of Ljubljana's famous landmarks. Highlights include Preseren Square, the Triple Bridge and Ljubljana Castle.
The central market is another must-see, as it's a vibrant place where the locals go to buy their fresh produce. It consists of an open-air market in the squares Vodnikov Trg and Pogacarnev Trg and a covered market between those two squares.
You can also take a walk on one of the 17 bridges that span the Ljubljanica River. Designed by architect Joze Plecnik, these bridges are not only pretty but they also provide a nice way to stroll around the city centre.
Metelkova Mesto
You’ll need at least a day to explore the city’s main attractions. Tivoli Park, the castle and Ljubljana’s Old Town are all worth a visit.
Alternatively, you can take a day trip to the gorgeous Smarna Gora mountain range within hiking distance of the capital. This is a great place to get some exercise and relax.
One of the best things to do in Ljubljana is to wander around Metelkova Mesto, Ljubljana’s most famous street art district. Here, you’ll find some of the city’s most extravagant murals.
In addition, you’ll see a lot of other fantastic work by local and international artists here. It’s a creative enclave that’s become known all over the world.
It’s also one of the seedier parts of the city, so be aware if you’re planning to visit during the evening. However, it’s a great area to hang out and meet some of the city’s local people.
