Koh Rok is part of an archipelago of islands off the southern coast of Thailand. Its miles of sandy beaches and warm, calm seas have maintained the laid-back vibe we all love about paradise islands.
A popular way to explore these islands is on a speedboat or longtail boat tour. Alternatively, you can book a private trip and tailor your itinerary.
1. What to Expect
If you’re going to Koh Rok, there are a few things you need to know before arriving. There are a few options for getting to the islands, the quickest being by plane from Krabi on the mainland (KBV) or by ferry and shared minibus from Sai Tai Mai.
There are also some amazing beaches on the island. Among the most popular is Khlong Khong, a 3 km long stretch of sand with restaurants, beach bars and bungalows that turn this beach into one of the island’s main party areas.
Another awesome spot is the untouched Haad Tha Naoad, found inside Mu Koh Lanta National Park. At one of its ends there’s a white rocky headland, Laem Tha Naoad, with spectacular views over Haad Tha Naoad. Swim here in crystal clear waters, and explore a 2 km long hiking forest trail. It comes with a 400 THB entrance fee, but it’s worth it!
2. Where to Stay
Koh Rok Islands are known for their powdery white sand, crystal clear waters, and abundant marine life. They are a popular day trip from Koh Lanta.
Located on the northern end of the island, Saladan Village is where most travellers set foot when visiting the island. The market village caters to tourists and offers a great selection of restaurants and accommodations.
Klong Nin Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Koh Lanta, where you can enjoy a relaxed stroll early in the morning or after a long day sightseeing. It is 1.5 km long and has soft sand throughout the whole area.
The Eastern side of the island, also known as Toongyoong Bay, is home to a few rustic and high-end resorts. However, the main reason to stay on this side of the island is its unspoiled nature. The mangrove forest surrounding this beach is a haven for wild monkeys and offers the perfect place to unwind and relax.
3. Where to Eat
When visiting Koh Rok, it’s important to find a restaurant that serves good food at reasonable prices. The majority of resorts have restaurants attached, but there are also a few stand-alone restaurants that serve Thai and Farang (Western) dishes.
The island has a handful of street food stands where you can munch on popular local snacks and sip milky chaa yen or a mango shake. For something more sophisticated, hit a restaurant on a beach or a high-end resort that has its own fine dining restaurant.
For a more authentic Thai experience, Malina’s Kitchen in Baan Khlong Tob is our favourite. This small family-run place offers an extensive menu and a very pleasant atmosphere.
4. What to Do
One of the best things to do when visiting Koh Rok Islands is go snorkeling. These islands are located close to Koh Lanta and part of the Mu Koh Lanta Marine National Park, so they boast a thriving underwater ecosystem.
There are a number of travel agents who can arrange a day tour for you, and they usually include lunch too. If you can’t find a tour that suits your budget, you can also book your own longtail or speedboat trip and explore the archipelago on your own time.
You can get to Koh Rok Noi by taking a short boat ride from Koh Lanta. It’s also worth going to the island’s national park and hiking through its jungle trails.
A tranquil beach nested between forests and cliffs, Bamboo Bay Beach is a great spot for relaxing or enjoying a May Tai. It’s a secluded place and attracts very few tourists.
