No trip to San Francisco is complete without a stop at the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. Not only does this historic landmark serve as a symbol of the city, it's also a testament to human ingenuity.

There are many ways to visit this storied landmark, from bus tours to walking tours. However, the best way to see the Golden Gate Bridge is by walking across it.

1. Visit the Visitor Center

The Golden Gate Bridge is the most iconic structure in San Francisco. It is a true showstopper with its rustic orange hues that stand out against the blue sky and emerald water.

Whether you're just passing through or you plan on staying for a few days, the bridge can be a great way to get out of town and see some of the most amazing natural landscapes in California. Visit Muir Woods for breathtaking giant redwoods, Sausalito for a relaxing day at the beach, or head west to explore Lands End Labyrinth, a hidden gem that provides breathtaking views of the Bay and the bridge.

While you're at the Visitor Center, take some time to learn a little bit more about the bridge and the engineering that went into its construction. You'll be amazed at some of the stats, like that the main cables used 80,000 miles of wire and that they could wrap around the earth three times!

2. Walk across the Bridge

Walking across the Golden Gate Bridge is one of the best ways to get up close and personal with this iconic San Francisco landmark. It is a scenic route that gives you stunning views of the city, Alcatraz and Angel Island.

There are plenty of places to take pictures and it’s free to walk or bike across the bridge. There are two passageways beneath the bridge deck, which give both walkers and bike riders access to the view areas on both the northern and southern sides of the bridge.

Once you’re on the eastern side of the bridge, there are a number of exhibits that will teach you all about the history and construction of this iconic landmark. There are also a few places you can stop to read a plaque or have a photo taken.

3. Take a Ferry

A trip to San Francisco isn’t complete without a stop at the Golden Gate Bridge. With its gently curved cables and deep orange hue, it’s a showstopper.

To get a closer look, you can take a ferry from the downtown area. The ride across the Bay is a quick, efficient and affordable way to explore some of the city’s most beautiful sights.

Aside from being a fun and easy way to travel, ferries are also a great place to relax and enjoy the scenery. They’re usually a quieter place to hang out than buses or trains and many offer food and drinks.

4. Visit Fort Point

If you’re looking for a more immersive experience than just walking across the Golden Gate Bridge, head to Fort Point. This historic Civil War-era brick fort sits right under the Golden Gate Bridge and offers stunning views of the Bay.

Visitors can explore the fort’s barracks, officers’ quarters and battlements on a ranger-led tour or during a Candlelight Tour from November through February. The weather is likely to be windy, so dress in layers.

Founded in 1959 by a group of retired military officers and civilian engineers, the Fort Point Museum Association fought to make the fort a National Historic Site and in 1970 succeeded. Check the website for self-guided tours or guided ones; pier crabbing demonstrations and seasonal events – like spooky Saturday-night candlelight tours – book fast!

5. Visit the Dome

One of the best ways to appreciate the Golden Gate Bridge is by walking or biking across it. This will expose you to the engineering that made it possible and heighten your senses.

Visiting the Dome at Palace of Fine Arts is another great way to see the beauty of San Francisco. This classical structure was built for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition, and is a favorite of both visitors and locals.

The dome is free to walk around and take photographs. It’s also a popular place for weddings and other special events.
