Located in the southwest corner of Otago Region and near its boundary with Southland, Lake Wakatipu is New Zealand’s longest lake. Shaped like an inverted “N” it rests against dramatic mountains and offers many activities to enjoy.

A scenic cruise along Lake Wakatipu is a must-do while you’re in Queenstown. This tour takes you through one of the most enticing landscapes in New Zealand and gives you a glimpse of some of its best-known landmarks.

1. Glenorchy Drive

Glenorchy Drive is a must-see scenic road that showcases the picturesque landscapes of Lake Wakatipu. This winding road passes through a number of untouched lakes and offers numerous lookouts to stop and take in the vistas.

Known for its spectacular panoramic views, Glenorchy is home to several unique attractions. Start your day with a brunch at Glenorchy Trading Post, a quaint store that sells locally-sourced products and offers front-row seats to stunning views of the wetlands and surrounding mountain ranges.

For a more challenging hike, try the Ben Lomond Track, one of Queenstown's most popular day walks. This short trek rewards trampers with incredible views of Lake Wakatipu and the surrounding mountains.

2. Ben Lomond Track

Located in the heart of the high country, Ben Lomond Track offers one of New Zealand’s most scenic alpine hikes. Climbing up the 1438m tall skyline access road, you’ll enjoy awe-inspiring lake and mountain views along the way.

There are plenty of other ways to get to the top of the Ben Lomond Track, but a jet boat tour is arguably the best. This exhilarating alternative to slow sightseeing cruises whizzes you around Lake Wakatipu, with panoramic views of cliffs and natural wonders along the way.

3. Skyline Gondola

If you're a Disney World fan, you probably have heard about the new Skyliner gondola. It's a great way to get around Epcot and Hollywood Studios without the hassle of driving or parking.

To get on the gondola, you'll walk up to a loading station, then follow directions to your destination. You won't need to worry about getting stuck because the gondolas continuously board.

The gondolas are fully enclosed and can hold up to six passengers (five if you have a wheelchair). Strollers are allowed but must fit within a 30''X48'' space.

4. The Shotover Jet

The Shotover Jet, which has thrilled over 3 million visitors since 1965, is world famous as the ultimate jet boat ride. It combines dramatic scenery with near-misses and full 360 deg spins along the Shotover River canyon walls.

It’s a fast-paced, heart-racing experience that is sure to thrill anyone. The experienced captain races across Lake Wakatipu and navigates tricky turns on the Kawarau River, before speeding through the milky waters of the Shotover River.

It also offers unobstructed views of the stunning alpine scenery that surrounds Queenstown. The tour takes about 1.5 hours.

5. Queenstown Bay Beach

A short stroll along a wooded lakeside track leads you to cosmopolitan Queenstown with its international shops, restaurants and bars.

Whether you are an adrenaline junkie visiting the adventure capital of the world or just want a holiday filled with calm and relaxation, Spinnaker Bay is the perfect place to retreat from the buzz of Queenstown.

For an experience like no other, the Shotover Jet is the ultimate jet boat ride in New Zealand. This high speed, white knuckle ride will thrill your heart and get your adrenalin pumping.

6. Glenorchy Walkway Scenic Point

Glenorchy Walkway Scenic Point is a must-see for anyone visiting Lake Wakatipu. It offers the best vistas of wetlands, Mt Earnslaw’s hanging glacier, and surrounding mountain ranges.

You can take a short cruise around the lake on a scenic boat tour to experience the best of the area’s beauty. These tours typically last 90 minutes and offer a mix of luxury comfort, informative commentary, and jaw-dropping views from the water.
